PERFORMANCE MAKING ALLOWS ME TO FORM EXPERIENTIAL RESPONSES TO LIFE’S SCOURGES & MYSTERIES.
I find in performance a sense of continuity and communion; I participate in the traditions, ritual and ceremonies that came before me and will outlast me. I aim to make work that allows the collaborators and audience to have rich, inspiring experiences that satisfy them beyond the moment of performance.
Working in the time-based medium of performance extends my original training as a dancer: the expressive body in time and space are central concerns of my performance making. I am strongly influenced by contemporary performance practice, I enjoy its aesthetics and its democracy. I like composing images with text, sound, and bodies that evoke sensation and memory rather than represent realistic scenes. I devise, perform in, direct and consult on independent projects in performance; I work with young artists in educational contexts in movement, performance making and acting; and I collaborate with communities where access to art is limited but valued tremendously.
